The Last Bear by Hannah Gold is a literary classic about friendship, forging your own path, and doing what’s right, debut author Hannah Gold inspires fans of Pax and A Wolf Called Wander to make a difference in any way they can.
There are no polar bears left on Bear Island. At least, that’s what April’s father tells her when his scientific research takes them to a faraway Arctic outpost.
But one night, April catches a glimpse of something distinctly bear shaped loping across the horizon. A polar bear who shouldn’t be there—who is hungry, lonely and a long way from home.
Fusing environmental awareness with a touching story of kindness, The Last Bear will include full-page black-and-white illustrations as well as a note from the author with facts about the real Bear Island and the plight of the polar bears.
My Thoughts About The Last Bear by Hannah Gold:

This book is one of the best books I’ve read this year. Easily one of the top favorites!
This is the story about a little girl named April who temporarily shifts to Bear Island because her father got a job there. Despite the name of the island, there’s actually no bear in Bear Island. But while roaming the island, April catches glimpse of a polar bear. He is hurt and skinny. Soon April and this polar bear forms an unlikely friendship.
I’ll just say that I ABSOLUTELY LOVED THIS BOOK WITH ALL MY HEART!!
This book is a MUST READ for so many reasons-
- This book talk about climate change and how it’s affecting the animals, especially polar bears. The young kids need to know about climate change from a young age because they will be the ones who will bear the consequences and will bring changes.
- This is a wonderful story about the friendship between human and animals. April and Bear shared one of the most precious friendship I’ve ever seen in my life. My heart melted. Also I cried, no, bawled my eyes out in the end. The ending was not heartbreaking, nobody dies, in fact it was the perfect ending. But I sobbed… God, it was so bittersweet. I loved their friendship so much. I wanted to protect them both with my entire heart.
- There are beautiful illustrations in this book that makes the story come alive.
- This is also a story about grief. April’s dad is having a tough time moving on from the death of his wife and he is stuck.
In conclusion, all I can say is this book is a must read for young and adults both. It’s a story about friendship and saving the animals. Really I cannot recommend this book enough. Please please pick this book up.
